Discover Christmas is only running on Sunday 3rd December 2023. We have two slots available to book, one during daylight and one at dusk, returning across the field under candlelight.
Afternoon - 12.30pm - 2pm (Daylight)
Twilight - 3pm-4.30pm (Dusk and then dark - with lots of candles!)
Please note. the Twilight Session will involve a walk back by torch/lantern and candle light. If you would prefer not to do this, please select an earlier option.
On arrival our team will meet you and help you follow the stars to the woodland, to tell the story of the birth of Jesus. Along the way there will be crafts, activities and reflections for all ages, designed by our Forest School team to help you explore this ancient story in a fresh and meaningful way.
Arrive at our A frame shelter and summerhouse to share warm spiced apple juice, a mince pie and toasted marshmallow (vegan options available) by the fire.
Each family will make a table wreath with fresh foliage to take home with an advent candle (a candle numbered 1-24) for counting down the days to Christmas Day.
Open ended Christmas themed play in the mud kitchen and plenty of other Forest School crafts and play for young ones while grown ups enjoy mulled apple juice by the fire.
Wander back across the field to you car (the twilight group will follow the candle light home. We suggest you also bring a torch each!).
The small private woodland is used by both Brookfields SEN School and Westwood Farm Schools throughout the usual school week. The woodland has a copse area, a nature pond, many mud kitchens, a summer house with wood burning stove for cold days, a quiet art corner, swings, hammocks and an A frame shelter over an open fire area with seating. We are always improving the site and open to new ideas and helpers from the community.
The space is small enough for our staff to know where everyone is, but big enough for people to feel they are able to find a quiet spot to have solitude if they want. It is a secure site, with no access to the public, so you can rest assured that your children will find it hard to wander off! We have use of the toilets at Westwood Farm School but we also have our own camping toilet for those who get caught short or want to go a bit more wild.

We work in almost all weathers outdoor and are prepared for it and love it! There is something incredibly powerful about spending time with those you love, around a campfire in the fresh air.
If it rains, we have shelters to stand under for those who like to stay dry and if it is cold (which is likely) we will have the open fire and summer house wood burning stove lit to warm us all up. We also have plenty of warm drinks and limit bookings to keep everyone comfortable.
Wear the right clothing
We suggest you plan to wear layers you can take off or add to if colds, wear waterproof jackets and trousers if you have them (especially for children) and tough waterproof shoes or wellies. Leave enough time before you come to find hats, scarves and gloves and to put waterproofs on young kids.
If it is very wet and your children enjoy playing in mud you may want to bring some dry clothes for them to change into, or a plastic bag to sit on going home! We find all kids are different, some leave spotless, some with hunt out mud anywhere they go and bathe in it.
All enquiries go through our contact form (below), instagram or facebook at present. We are a small team working outdoors most days, so please be patient with us.
We run Wild City Collective groups from the small private woodland area in Tilehurst near Brookfields SEN School & Westwood Farm School (postcode RG31 6RY) which has two entrances, but on this occasion we will only use the Westwood Farm School one. Postcode: RG31 6RY
Free parking available on site, please follow the signs to the Infant School Carpark.
We suggest aiming to arrive, park up and put on wellies and waterproofs a little beforehand. We will walk across the field as one group, so please do your best to arrive on time.
