We meet to play, explore nature, grow, read and share food by the fireside.
Our small, friendly group meets every Tuesday morning during term time from 10-11:30am.
The activities on offer are seasonal, creative, nature based and open ended.
Little Robins is our Forest School stay and play group for kids aged 0-5 in West Reading on Tuesdays. If you have older children, you might be interested in our Wild Camps (during the holidays) or our Wondrous Wrens group for Home Educated families (during term time).
Forest School is a Scandiavian-based model of holistic outdoor play and learning which helps children to enjoy environments like our wild woods in ways they may not so easily have at home. For example, by eating around a fire, or sliding in mud! Although there are some levels of risk to these activities, they are carefully considered and managed and, in this way, help children to develop important skills and beliefs such as self-confidence and resilience. With your loving support and our community, we hope this group will help your children to reap the benefits of wild play.
We usually end with a story or song by the fireside. Sessions always include tea and fresh coffee for grown-ups to help themselves to. If you bring your own insulated cup, it will stay warm while you explore!
It is up to you and your child if you choose to join in the planned activities or enjoy exploring the woods and making your own discoveries. Children remain the responsibility of their accompanying adult at all times whilst they are in the woods. As a community, we do our best to keep an eye on risky areas such as the pond, the entrance gate, and fires.
We have volunteers helping our sessions run smoothly, including, in some seasons, work experience placements from Brookfields SEN school. If you have any queries about this, do drop us an email or fill in the contact form, and we would be happy to discuss it further with you.
What about the weather? Our group runs in all weathers, so come dressed appropriately for fun in rain, sun or rain! Feel free to bring extra warm drinks for you and your child to have by the fireside. We have tea and coffee available for adults, but please bring your own thermos cup if you can, as our tin cups cool quickly.
If it is windy do you still meet? In the event of high winds or lightning, a session will be cancelled for safety, and you’ll be notified by 8 am. that morning by email or our private WhatsApp group. This is because it is not safe under the trees in very windy weather or lightning. We will process a refund for you for the session in these circumstances, either by bank transfer or discount code.
