Wondrous Wrens

For families, Home Educating, Flexi-schooling and deferring school start

“Thank you for the most wonderful term of joy in the woods. You have created a very special place.”

Mary, Wondrous Wrens Parent

At Wondrous Wrens, we hold a space for any families who are deferring school starts, Home-Educating, Flexi schooling, or rethinking education for their children and would like to be a part of a supportive, caring community. We offer a safe space to enrich your family’s home education journey.

Our small, friendly group meets every Monday morning during term time from 10 to 11:30am.

Our learning together follows two brilliant and beautiful season-based Home Education Resources; the Exploring Nature  with Children Curriculum and Raising up Wild Things (we hold classroom licenses for these).

Along with these resources, our learning is led by the seasonal changes in the woods around us;

Our learning together follows two brilliant and beautiful season-based Home Education Resources; the Exploring Nature  with Children Curriculum and Raising up Wild Things (we hold classroom licenses for these).

Along with these resources, our learning is led by the seasonal changes in the woods around us;

Autumn

In autumn we watch the leaves change and fall and marvel as the fungi appear. We prepare to hibernate and slow down with the woodland. We watch the pumpkins in our veg patch ripen and cook soups together to warm us. We spread woodchip on the ground and get the veg beds ready for spring.

Winter

In winter we explore the weather, and watch the ice appear and melt again. We watch the woodland go into a slow sleep and learn about hibernating creatures. We plan for the spring with our seeds and polytunnel and enjoy cocoa by the wood-burning stove in the summer house.

Spring

In Spring the pond wakes up with frog spawning and birds return to nest. We watch the changes gather pace week to week and see the trees wake up. We hope for the bluetits to return to their nesting box near the fireside.  We cook garlic bread in the pizza oven with the wild garlic.

Summer

In summer the dragonflies emerge and birds are very active. The baby bluetits have fledged from their nest box. We watch the tadpoles develop into froglets and leave the pond; we start to see the newts emerge. Frogs and stag beetles are abundant and the slow worms start to sunbathe under our black sheeting (providing they are not disturbed too much!).

“We have loved every minute of forest school, thank you so much

We recognise that families who Home Educate often want more flexibility in the way that they book. With that in mind, we have restructured and simplified our pricing.

Now you choose which works best for your family, either paying per session, for 6 weeks or 12 weeks at a time. Paying per session offers more flexibility whilst 12 weeks offers the most value and 6 weeks a happy balance.

Our group meets every Monday morning during term time from 10-11:30am.

What is the group like?

  • We offer to hold space, bring together community, give you access to nature and a safe place to lead your children’s learning journey.
  • All families, parents, and homes educate differently. We ask that everyone who joins our group come with an open mind and understanding of each other’s individual approaches. We want our community to be a safe place for everyone.
  • No one family is the same. Every family may want something slightly different from an outdoor learning environment, so we offer plenty of flexibility for you and your children.
  • As such our group is not heavily structured in the way that mainstream school is. It has a clear end (gathering by the fire) but is otherwise open and seasonally led. If your child enjoys or gets comfort from a structure we are happy to help add this for them, just let us know.
  • Our numbers are capped to keep the group small, familiar and friendly.
  • We cook together every week by the fire, whether it’s vegetable kebabs or cake.

Cancellations
Our group runs in all weathers, so come dressed appropriately for fun in rain, sun or rain! Feel free to bring extra warm drinks for you and your child to have by the fireside. We have tea and coffee available for adults, but please bring your own thermos cup if you can, as our tin cups cool quickly.

In the event of high winds or lightning forecast, a session will be cancelled for safety and you’ll be notified by 8 am that morning by email or Whatsapp group. This is because it is not safe under the trees in very windy weather or lightning. We will process a refund for you for the session in these circumstances, either by bank transfer or discount code.

“We have absolutely loved all the sessions we have been to so far. You put so much effort into each session. Thanks so much.
We have also loved meeting such wonderful people and kiddies.
